Namings
If a christening or other religious ceremony is not your thing - or if you want to allow your child to grow up and make their own decision about which path they want to follow - then namings are a terrific alternative. You still get to celebrate the arrival of that special little person (or adult - see below), and announce to the world the joy you feel - all in the presence of those who really matter.

There are a zillion ways you can celebrate the occasion:
·sprinkle the child with water or flower petals
·incorporate readings, blessings, poems
·present a naming certificate
·release balloons
·plant a tree
·prepare a 'time capsule', perhaps to be re-opened when the child reaches 21
·light candles
·ask godparents, mentors, guardians to make a pledge of care to the new child
·prepare a photo signature frame - a photo framed with a wide margin to allow those
attending to write messages to the child
·compose a special song for the occasion

Don't forget, namings can also be a beautiful way of welcoming a child (newly born, or adopted) into a family, and recognising the role of brothers and sisters.

Adult namings
Adults can change their names too, for example by reverting to their 'maiden' name after a divorce, or by adopting a new name when entering a religious community.

Alternatively, maybe you've just never liked the name your parents gave you!
